I spent two years trying to make SD Cards more nostalgic
What if SD cards were around in the 1980? That's the question we've all been afraid to ask, probably because there were a lot of things very similar to SD cards around back then but I'm gonna ignore those. I'm doing what I want so in this video I'm building custom SD cards which look cooler and bring a delectable nostalgic vibe.

We all love dice, right? They roll, they uh... roll more. They're great, but they've been the same for thousands of years, let's mix it up a bit and build Mr. Dice, the ultimate digital dice rolling gadget. In this video I use a Rasperry Pi Pico along with a custom PCB, some off the shelf components, and a bit of 3D printing to bring this thing to life. PCB Production provided by NextPCB.com Hi...

Was anyone else bothered by the use of the phrased “wired in serial”? I mean, I guess it’s not wrong per se, but it just feels wrong. It’s wired in parallel and using serial communication for the data pin, so I get where he’s coming from.

That first one reminded me of the first time I saw thay kind of feature, there were N64 memory cards that had switches on them to do that. Always made it a little confusing coming back to a game and trying to find where your save was.

Really love where you ended up! The only thing I might have done differently on the cartridges is a negative extrusion along the top edge to extend the print along that edge. Would be cool to have a tray of these cartridges with “book spines” to know what’s where.

This is the kind of thing I've imagined doing--even them being in a card style. However, I'm not a crafter, so this is a bit beyond me right now. How did you make the actual cards, with the wide connector pins? Is there any concern about them scratching off over time, from being inserted and pulled out?

I could see these being used in something like a MISTer setup. Imagine just filling SD cards with collections of ROMS, per console, franchise etc. You can also choose the size of the SD cart inside, So you can use an 4GB cart for something like the SNES cart. but use an 64GB SD cart for an PSX collection. Now put them in some switch form factor cases, and you could use them in a cool setup. Like a little shelf above an arcade and switch out the Games per core. Just one big SD card would be easier, but could be fun to have a multiple flash storage backups of game collections on one of these cards.

I remember in elementary school, all the girls had those little music clip things. Was pretty much collectable chips, with a small clip of their favorite songs. Was a cool idea, but something like that could go way further these days, and relatively cheaply, while going beyond just music. This project kinda reminded me of those clip things. Anyways, i'd love something like this to for anime seasons, and classic movie trilogies. game wise, i think i'd like it classified by system, then volumes. then again, a wall of those things would be awesome.
